26th December. That’s the day the first batch departed to their training place. My friend, Shook Ping, is the first batch. So, he told me about his first day of leaving his home sweet home. The trainees were required to reach Bukit Jalil an hour earlier. He got up at 2.30am, got ready and leave his home. For me, it’s like too early and being a Malaysian, I’m really sure that the flight will be delay. However, that’s my opinion. If he want to get up early, that is his wish. He went to Bukit Jalil, registered his name and went to airport by bus which was provided. By the time he reached Sabah, it’s already 11 something. So you can see how tiring was the journey. (For your information, he was not chosen for the national service, he applied for it)
I had explained briefly about the journey most of the trainees experience. Now I’m going to talk about my honest opinions regarding this National Service.
I think that this National Service is just a waste of time and money. Millions of ringgit are spent each year for this program. The money can be used for benefit things such as helping the poor, reduce food price, etc. It’s not worth it to waste money to buy special uniforms for the trainee and hired a group of ‘soldiers’ to handle the camp.
Besides that, what is the aim of doing this National Service? According to the Government, they create this program to instill patriotism in teenagers. Although the Government have a good intention, but is this a way to do it? You can’t just transform teenagers into a patriotic people in just 3 months. It takes time to achieve something, not by forcing teenagers to join it and threaten them that they will go to jail if they fail to join the training. Is that the examples the Government trying to show to the citizen?
Every time when I asked my friends who are interested to join this training, all of them answer "It’s fun! I can use the M16 for the first time!", "Holiday nothing to do. Just join lah", "I’m super active. I can’t stay still for a minute" and "I want to make new friends". None of them said they want to join because of their love to the country. So now you can see that Government can never fulfill that aim.
The way they arrange the teenagers into 3 batches also create problem to those involved. Usually, the ‘smart’ teenagers were placed in first batch so that they could start early and leave early and start apply for higher education. However, this year, from what I had observed, the ‘smart’ students were placed in 2nd and 3rd batch whereas the ‘stupid’ students were placed in 1st batch. Why do the Government arranged them that way? I know it’s the computer that arranged them but can’t they set it to arrange the teenagers according to some criteria? Those who are in 2nd and 3rd batch had to waste their valuable time waiting for their turn. They can’t do anything else beside looking for part time job.
There are ways for the Government to improve the program and make it enjoyable for teens. Firstly, instead of forcing the teens, if there are some teenagers who doesn’t want to join the training, he/she must find somebody else who are willing to replace their place. That way, nobody are forced to join the training and the government can expect 100% of the chosen one attend the training. Beside that, the arrangement of teenagers into 3 batch should be based on academic results. Those who are really care about their studies are put in 1st batch whereas the ‘i-don’t-care-about-my-future’ type of person are put in the 3rd batch because they don’t really care about what they should do in their free time.
If the Government can change their way of handling this National Service, I’m sure the attendance of trainees in each camp will be 100%.
