Farewell 1st Senior

When I first heard the news that she decided to resign, it caught me a little bit by surprise as I always see her as someone that would stay in the company for a longer period of time. I got the news from someone else instead of directly from her and I didn’t ask her about it. I chose to pretend that I don’t know anything about her resignation in front of her, just to see when and how long she wants to keep the information from me. Turns out, finally in late June that she decided that it’s the time to reveal the truth to me.XD

Although it has been four years since I first started work, I could still remember clearly the 1st day that I met her, my 1st ever senior in my 1st ever company, during my 1st ever working experience. Perhaps that’s what make it extra memorable. But she totally forgotten about it when I recap it to her…. ><

I was waiting at my desk after the IT briefing and she came over to my place with drawings in her hand. She was wearing a dark blue dress (that’s how clear is the memory) and she introduced herself so briefly, “Hi, I’m Liew. We discuss at the table over there”. And immediately after that, she gave me my first task, to check the existing structural capacity of the flat slab with the new loading.

“Let me know the result after you check. Thanks ya”

So much expectation on me on my first day. If only she know that 95% of what I have learnt in University already gone down to the toilet hole after the Final Year exams were over. Because of this, I have to admit that the first few months were intimidating and very challenging for me, scary to some extent, because the things that I know is not to the par of her expectation of what I’m supposed to know. It even reach to the point that I started to doubt myself whether am I capable enough or strong enough to continue on with this career path.

Ironically, it is THAT situation that improves me and molded me into what I am today. Of all the seniors that I have worked under before, it is under her tutelage and her guidance that I grow the most. Her comments on what I lacked of in engineering knowledge can be a little bit harsh and painful to accept sometimes, but that’s how we can improve; through non sugar-coated, constructive comments.

So thank you Ms Liew for all of your teaching and guidance all these while. I know that I can be difficult sometimes and tend to argue when we have different point of views or different approach in solving a matter but that’s what make working life more interesting =D

Thank you for trusting me with the penthouse design (though I still need your technical advice from time to time).

Thank you for giving me so much learning opportunities and the chance to attend the site walk and site meeting with you. I believe that for an engineer, it is a big deal when it comes to their first ever site walk. It represents a milestone in their career to be able to see their project site personally and you gave me that chance as early as the third week of my working period. Most freshly graduated engineers don’t even have that chance even after working for a year plus.
