Build and Break Competition 2012

During the opening of the competition, there were 2 cranes structures placed in front of the audience and there was even a picture of a crane at their poster. That’s why we thought that they will most probably ask us to build a crane. We were excited and relieved at the same time, because the day before that, we managed to discuss on how to build the crane in the most effective ways.

But in the end, they asked us to build a bridge instead. 3 thoughts entered my head at that time.

1) Yes! Bridge! We can do it!

2) No straws! Damn, need to change plan dy.

3) WTH, just a small bundle of string?? And they are freaking thick too!! Habis liao…..

No sure about others but for me, strings are so much better than normal tape. Yeah, I know you need more time with strings, but being an ex-scout myself, if you can tie the strings in the right way, your structure will be a first class standard.

We cope with what we have and it was an intense two and a half hour. The funny part during that time was that we were using the tape like tap water. We just simply tape here, tape there, and a little bit more here. Few moments later, we realized we were running out of tapes and there were still so many parts that we haven’t stick yet. That’s the time we started to treat our tape like precious tap water.

After we completed our structure, we were pretty confidence on getting the top 5 places. That is until we turned our head and looked at the team next to us. Holy crap, their structure is so beautiful!! It almost resemble the Penang bridge and looking back at our table, ours looked like a kampung bridge, designed for the cows to cross. We were totally demotivated. Have you ever seated for an exam and you need to do an essay question? You finished writing a page of essay and you handed in your paper and you feel pretty good, and when you looked at the table beside you, the person wrote 3 pages of them. Yeah, our situation was something like that.

It was real torture for us to wait for the testing load period. We did joke around about going back early instead of staying until the results time. The testing time came, and you know what? Our structure can handle 2.6kg of loads! That’s the 4th heaviest load but in terms of efficiency, we won 2nd place! ^^

It was a feel good moment for us but it didn’t last long for me because at that very night, Avril Lavigne was singing her heart out and I didn’t go to her concert. Twice! T.T

Barrier Between Us

I’m not giving up yet, though there were a few times I almost lost hopes of trying. Cheering a person up and trying to be close with the person is not an easy task.

Everytime I tried breaking the wall between us and when I thought I managed to do just that, you rebuild that wall again. But I tried again. I know you might have difficulties sharing your feelings due to the misconception that you will trouble others by just sharing your burden. No, you are not a burden. If you really care about others, how about trying to trust others with your problem?

Every hole I managed to make on that wall, you fixed them almost immediately and you even make them thicker than before. I’m human like you too, with feeling too. I can’t just keep on shattering that wall. Sooner or later, I will grow tired of doing that same thing over and over again. That’s the reason why I stop putting effort to talk to you again.

I think both of us can feel the distance between us. It wasn’t a nice feeling and I can’t take that gap anymore. I will try again to break that wall, once and for all.
